Situated in a community led Wildlife Management areas, known as Randilen, guests of Elewana Tarangire Treetops enjoy a secluded and private safari experience. The luxury tree-top rooms, elevated above the ground afford incredible views over the tops of surrounding marula and baobab trees. With a wide private balconies, each are lavishly furnished using natural materials that are blended with contemporary Africana décor, to provide guests with a unique and most memorable safari experience.

Encasing an impressive baobab tree, the spacious and tranquil reception, lounge and dining room overlook the swimming pool and a waterhole that sees a steady flow of wild animal visitors. As the camp is located in the WMA, activities such as bush walks and night game drives are possible, which are not permitted in many other areas. Bush walks allow guests to get “up close and personal” with nature, and experience the bush to a more intimate degree. Alternatively, a night game drive with the option to go off road, in the African bush affords the opportunity to see an array of creatures who prefer the cover of darkness, the African bush hosts a different assortment of creatures after the sun goes down.

local cuisine

When travelling to a new country many people like to flavour the local cuisine. In Tanzania this can vary depending on the geographical region. Along the coastal regions of Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar spicy foods are common, often flavoured with coconut milk collected straight from the palm.

Whereas in the mainland dishes vary, including foods such as wali (rice), ugali (maize porridge), nyama choma (grilled meat), mshikaki (marinated beef), samaki (fish), pilau (rice mixed with a variety of spices), biriyani, and ndizi-nyama (plantains with meat). Vegetables commonly used in Tanzania include bamia (okra), mchicha (a kind of spinach) and kisamvu (cassava leaves). There are at least 17 different types of bananas grown in Tanzania, which are used for soup, stew, and chips.

The Elewana Collection properties all have a Swahili themed evening each week, offering guests the opportunity to enjoy some of the local dishes. At Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge a new menu has been developed to incorporate ingredients that are native to the region, such as cassava (Manihot esculenta), air-potato, and the rare Dioscorea bulbifera Kweme Praline (Oyster-nut), which is only found in Tanzania. We have been approached by the Slow Food Movement Tanzanian to start cooking with this ingredient and place it on the culinary map.We have taken local dishes and developed them into tantalising combinations of flavours and textures to stimulate your senses. Below are a couple of the new menus that guests can look forward to enjoying while staying with us at Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge.

community cooker

By Hannah Campbell

Loisaba Conservancy is remote and located a three hour drive from the nearest major town, meaning disposing of waste can be challenging. We have to be mindful when disposing of items, and ensure waste is sorted into biodegradable (that can be used in our BioDigester!), items to burn and  items to recycle.

Plastic is an ever growing issue globally, with it making up approximately 11% of household waste and taking up to 1,000 years to decompose. But what if there was a safe way to turn plastic into energy?

In 1990, Jim Archer recognised this increasing environmental problem around Kenya, and that rubbish could be a never-ending resource to produce energy if processed responsibly. In partnership with Mumo Musuva, he began to develop designs for a very simple, inexpensive rubbish burner which could also serve as a stove for cooking…

The Community Cooker is an innovative yet practical waste-to-energy technology that has tremendous potential for environmental, economic and social change in low resource settings around the world. It burns rubbish in an environmentally friendly way at 880oC – 1200oC to generate heat energy for cooking, baking and heating water in large quantities. At these temperatures, the Cooker achieves 90% combustion efficiency and meets European Environmental Standards, US EPA standards and Kenyan standards for Nitrogen Oxides, Sulphur Dioxides, Carbon Monoxide, Furans and Dioxins as tested by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS).

After the first prototype was built in 2008 and passed the emission test (EPA standard), the Community Cooker Foundation (CCF) was established in 2010. The CCF is a Kenyan based charity that promotes sustainable waste management by encouraging institutions, people and communities to use Community Cookers to clean up the environment, save trees, improve health and create employment value.

The implementation of the Community Cooker at Loisaba means 100% of waste (other than glass and metal which are recycled) at Loisaba can be either put through our BioDigester or into the Community Cooker to provide fuel, creating a much more sustainable way of disposing waste!

In The Community

learn explore conserve

The rising awareness of the newly termed “climate crisis” is seizing the headlines as we go to press, forcing us to think again about our relationship with nature. Growing concerns over biodiversity and species extinctions are being reported, and alarming statistics from respected scientists suggest an uncertain future for our planet, its’ natural resources and our human race. In this context, conservation and environmental education plays a vital role in preparing young people for the threats and challenges they are likely to face.

Here in East Africa this holds even more true, as the lives of so many are intertwined with their natural environment on a daily basis. Walks to the river to collect water involve encounters with elephants; crops always relied upon to support the family fail unexpectedly through drought; rains expected in October arrive in December and stay until March, flooding the drylands and damaging infrastructure. Times are changing and the Land & Life Foundation is determined to help young people steer a course through.

This Wildlife Warrior Resource Pack, printed this month thanks to funding from partners SafariPros, is being distributed to all Wildlife Warrior Club Schools in February 2020. The pack has been developed specifically for the Wildlife Warriors of East Africa. Bright young conservationists armed with in depth knowledge and understanding offer our world the best hope of not only survival but of development and bettering of lives for all. The resource pack features nine units, each with a different conservation or environmental focus. The information and activities are designed to promote a collaborative “active learning” approach that emphasizes hands-on learning and enhances the value of shared experiences. The material is aimed specifically at an East African audience, with relevant examples, illustrations and contexts. Every chapter has simple exercises that enable students to work directly with the material alone or in small groups, and can easily be adapted or expanded by the teacher or session leader. Topics range from human-wildlife conflict and soils and sustainable agriculture to waste and recycling and urban development.

When visiting any of the schools supported by Elewana Collection’s charitable arm, the Land & Life Foundation, take the opportunity to look at the new Wildlife Warrior Resource Pack and the projects that the children are working on to become future conservationists that will protect this planet.

The pace at Shanga is slightly slower in January, which gives us time to experiment, play, prototype, train and make some new products especially in the glass department.

Looking for ways to use our not quite perfect items sometimes needs a little inspiration from our environment. A day at the beach, seeing barnacles and shell cluster on rocks was Ruth's for these beautiful bottles covered in our excess glass beads made by Balsey & Rajabu.

Items with a twist

Producing glass items with a twist is a collaborative effort starting with Ally & Halidi making metal moulds. Then the whole glass department being part of the blowing twisting, holding and final shaping processes. Can you see these sitting on your dining table?

Pots with animals

This January our fun little animals found their way onto our round pot lids as handles. Honey, jam, sugar possibilities are endless or just for show. Alec our master animal maker used the time making these to also extend Livingston, Erick and Hamis's training.

New year, new things and some of these are already my favourites.

A visit to Shanga is a must when passing through Arusha to meet the people and see all the beautiful products they make with love and dedication.

Shanga’s purpose-built, open workshop is located in the grounds of Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge and is a wonderful experience for visitors to meet the inspirational staff, to view and participate in the creative process behind Shanga products.

Shanga is a successful social enterprise which employs people with disabilities to create unique, high quality and handmade jewelry, glassware and homewares, incorporating recycled materials into many of our products. Shanga products are sold in Tanzania and around the world, with all profits being reinvested back into the development of new products; researching and implementing additional recycling methods into our activities.

Ecotourism Kenya, defines Ecotourism as;

‘the involvement of tourists in environmental conservation activities directly linked to addressing human development needs, and promotes equitable sharing of benefits accrued from tourism with local communities while supporting their nature conservation values’.

Their vision is to bring together conservation, communities and tourism in a responsible manner and the principles governing ecotourism include;

  • Encourage travel to natural areas
  • Minimize impact of tourism activities on natural attractions
  • Recognize and build awareness about local conservation values and their importance to society
  • Provide direct benefits and empowerment for local people at destinations without retrogression on environmental, cultural or local living standards.
  • Respect local people, their customs and culture
