The Land & Life Foundation, in collaboration with PARC, has embarked on a significant initiative in Amboseli, Kenya, partnering with the local Esiteti School and the surrounding community. This comprehensive development plan, spanning five to 10 years, is dedicated to fostering sustainable advancements that positively impact the community and the environment in this drought-prone region.
The recently completed phase one of the project, concluded in November 2023, achieved the following milestones:
- Solarization of the Esiteti School Borehole: The installation of a Solar PV system and pumping infrastructure has transformed the Esiteti School borehole, ensuring consistent water supply for the school and the local community via renewable energy. This innovative approach replaces the reliance on unsustainable, expensive, and environmentally harmful diesel-generator pumps.
- Expansion of Water Storage Capacity: 30,000 litre water tanks equipped with a piping system were added to facilitate reliable storage and access to the borehole water for the 700+ Esiteti School students, faculty and staff.
- Implementation of "Lion-Lights": Strategically placed "lion-lights" were installed to safeguard the water tanks by humanely deterring wildlife, contributing to the overall safety of the area.
- Upgrade of School Kitchen Facilities: New washing dhobi and kitchen taps were installed to enhance the school's sanitation facilities.
- Community Water Distribution Centre: A dedicated water distribution centre, supplied by the solarized school borehole, was constructed and serves over 190 households in the community.
- Elephant Proofing: A "loose-rock wall" was built around the community water distribution centre to safely discourage elephants from accessing this area.
- Access to Water for Wildlife: To address human-wildlife conflicts, particularly with elephants, a separate animal water trough, supplied through a solarized borehole, was constructed exclusively for the use of livestock and wildlife.
Having successfully implemented phase one, the forthcoming stage of the integrated development plan will focus on fostering the growth of social enterprises, especially for women's groups in the area. Additionally, a permaculture project will be introduced to enhance food security for both the school and the wider community.
