black rhino calf at Loisaba©loisaba.org

The arrival of a black rhino calf at Loisaba Conservancy marks a historic milestone for conservation in Kenya. Born on October 16th to eight-year-old Kibou, originally from Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the healthy calf named Valentine commemorates Loisaba's reintroduction of the black rhino held in February of this year.

For Elewana guests staying at Loisaba Star Beds, Loisaba Tented Camp, and Loisaba Lodo Springs, this historic birth means an enhanced wildlife viewing experience, with the opportunity to spot all of Africa's "Big Five" during their stay. While the protective rhino mother makes viewing challenging, lucky visitors may catch a glimpse of baby Valentine and Kibou during game drives through the conservancy.

This momentous birth brings Loisaba's black rhino population to 22, contributing to Kenya's remarkable conservation success story. The country's black rhino population has grown from 400 in 1989 to over 1,000 today, making it Africa's third-largest rhino population after South Africa and Namibia. The birth of Valentine symbolizes hope for Kenya's black rhino population and validates the importance of connected, protected habitats, emphasizing the vital role of local communities in wildlife protection and habitat preservation for future generations.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy tree planting©lewa.org

Between June and October 2024, Elewana’s Kifaru House donated 300 tree seedlings to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy’s Conservation Education Programme. This diverse collection included a mix of native Acacia and Ficus species and fruit trees, all destined for local schools supported by Lewa’s Conservation Education Programme. In addition, Lewa’s Community Department contributed fruit trees to further support these schools.

The trees have already been planted, and we are thrilled to announce that the students are now responsible for their care. This initiative not only enhances the school environment but also fosters a sense of stewardship and responsibility among the students.
Kifaru House’s in-house tree nursery grows a variety of indigenous and fruit trees, which are then donated to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. In turn, these trees are distributed to schools throughout the area, contributing to both environmental sustainability and educational enrichment.

SunsetOverStarbed

A trip to Kenya would not be complete without a night at the Loisaba Star Beds. This unique location, heralded as one of the first ‘star beds’ is an experience guests will treasure for a lifetime.

The stylish but rustically designed rooms blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment. The location on top of a rocky kopje affords awe inspiring views across the surrounding valley and a permanent waterhole below attracts a plethora of wildlife who visit day and night.

Hand crafted beds are creatively designed so they can be wheeled in and out from the shelter, enabling guests to spend a night sleeping out under the glimmering star filled night sky.

Aside from watching the animal kingdom pass from your bed (which would be tempting day and night) there are a range of actives on offer including game drives, walking safari, e-bike safari, camel safari, fishing, and horse riding plus a visit to the see Loisaba’s anti-poaching unit and the remarkable sniffer dogs, as well as community visits.

Dining at the star beds takes place in a peaceful, intimate setting with wonderful views. Menus incorporate local fresh ingredients with an ever-changing choice of seasonal products served up in delicious salads, grilled dishes, and creative master pieces by the on-site chef. There is also a private dining option for honeymooners and special occasions.
