The Randilen Wildlife Management Area (WMA), where Elewana Tarangire Treetops is located, has come up with a creative way of spreading their positive impact work and future plans to local communities. This year the annual report with the help of Honeyguide was translated into a 55-minute Swahili-language film.
Many community members cannot read or lack the opportunity to travel to an office to collect a printed report, so a traditional document, whether in hard copy or soft copy, does not reach all the people the WMA serves. That is why Randilen, with support from Honeyguide, has produced its annual report as a 55-minute Swahili-language film. Shown in every village across the WMA on a roadshow, the film ensures that every WMA shareholder, whether a grandmother, schoolchild or herder, has the same opportunity to see how their WMA is performing and where it is heading.
This year, Randilen aims to reach more than 5,000 viewers. Last week alone, screenings in five villages drew nearly 1,000 people. The community’s response says it best: “The film is too short (at 55 minutes). We want it longer and shown more often so we can better understand what is happening in our WMA.”
By turning the annual report into a shared community experience, Randilen aims to strengthen transparency, accountability, and ownership of conservation.
